Here in the Northwest, our spring weather can be unpredictable, but our need for sun protection is constant. Here are the essentials you need to keep your skin safe and healthy as we transition into the warmer months.

1. Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+ Sunscreen: Your Non-Negotiable Daily Staple

This is the cornerstone of any effective sun protection routine, especially in the PNW.

  • Why Broad-Spectrum? This means it protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Both types contribute to skin damage, premature aging, and increased risk of skin cancer.

  • Consider Mineral Formulas: For sensitive skin, or those looking for a physical barrier, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are excellent choices. They sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays.

4. Hydration and After-Sun Care: Support Your Skin

Even with the best protection, it’s good to support your skin’s health.

  • Moisturize Daily: Keep your skin hydrated to maintain its barrier function, which helps it defend against environmental aggressors, including UV damage.
  • After-Sun Products: If you do get a little too much sun, soothing after-sun lotions with aloe vera or ceramides can help calm and repair the skin.

5. Seek Shade: The Simplest Form of Protection

When the sun is at its strongest, usually between 10 AM and 4 PM, seek shade whenever possible.

  • Umbrellas, Awnings, Trees: Utilize natural or artificial shade to reduce your direct exposure to UV radiation.
